Frequently Asked Questions

What is a stock symbol/epic/ticker/short code and how do I find it?

When a stock first starts trading on the market it is assigned a unique abbreviation.

There are different terms used for these abbreviated stocks names. Most commonly they are known as Stock Symbols, Epic Codes, Ticker Codes or Short Codes.

Learning these codes for stocks you own or are watching means you can obtain quotes on our website quicker. For example you can just type LAND into the quote bar instead of Land Securities to obtain a quote.

To find a stock code press the lookup button on the green bar at the foot of the page and type in the name of the stock you wish to find the stock code for. A lookup button is also present on the Place a trade screen.

We are aware that the lookup function does not find all Exchange Traded Funds and Exchange Traded Commodities (ETFs and ETCs). If you cannot find the ETF/ETC you wish to trade on our website please reference the London Stock Exchange ETF & ETC stock list which is updated weekly. For more information about ETFs & ETCs please see the FAQ linked below.
